Assignment 4: Final Submission

I was pleased with my feedback on Assignment 4, particularly as I had placed a lot of emphasis on technical quality in addition to telling my story.

The two key points to reflect on and develop further going forwards are:

1. Telling the story – getting the balance right between giving enough information to tell the story, but leaving enough space for the viewer to fill in the blanks.  I think in the past I have been driven by a desire, an anxiety almost to make sure that the viewer interprets the story in the way that I want them to.  We discussed that it is basically impossible to absolutely control the viewer because so much will depend upon their own circumstance.  It is not to say don’t try, simply to be content that you’ve had a go, and it is ok if the viewer invents a different story.  I think remembering this, which could quell the anxiety aspect will help a lot if I can manage to do so.  I will also put extra consideration onto this point when taking images and editing.

2.  Dynamism of shots – early in my studies, I came across the concept of Dead Pan, and it is an approach that appeals to me.  But, I think this has lead to me thinking that every shot needs to be taken dead straight, in turn this has lead to a lack of dynamism in some of my shots – for example in this assignment, the vitamin and alcohol shots are simply straight on.  Within a set such as this assignment, better to create more interest by trying to vary compositions.  Again, an approach that I need to remember in future shots.

Overall, I do not see a need to re-edit my images for this assignment.  As a course of action, I will take particular time to consider the two points above as I research other photographers to understand how they have approached the two topics.
