End of Course Learning Outcomes

LO1 demonstrate an ability to make technically accomplished photographic work and apply technique purposefully and appropriately

I think that my Assignment 5 is the most technically accomplished piece of work.  I think this due to the technical technique used in capturing the images, but also in the editing and production techniques to create the physical book.

In creating the assignment, I used context derived principally from Keith Arnatt and Lee Freidlander to act with a sense of purpose in selecting the images to capture, and in the editing.

Assignment 2 was designed to capture the vagaries of ‘Italian spirit’ and particularly the characters I met whilst travelling around Tuscany.  My purpose was to embed that spirit into each of the images and I feel that the assignment is successful in that regard.  I chose a black and white presentation format for this assignment as I felt it brought a greater cohesion to the body of images as a whole, it removed the different colours across the range of images and, I feel, means that the viewer spends more time looking at the people shown in the images.

LO2 be able to translate ideas into visual outcomes with confidence and autonomy

Assignment 4 was driven by the words that were literally everywhere at the time “Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives”.  My idea was to focus on the Stay Home part of the phrase.  I felt that I wanted to tell a story about all of the challenges I faced and the way I was living at the time, therefore telling a story.

I think my final submission brings the different aspects of my life together into a cohesive whole, and then my choice to present these images in a single frame that used the colour scheme used by the government as part of the background to their catchphrase creates a visual outcome clearly linked back to the inspiration for the assignment.

My second link for this outcome comes from an exercise, an Archival Intervention.  I have chosen this because it stands out as an exercise so different from the rest in terms of its nature and because I was extremely pleased with the results.  It is not something that I have done before and I think it is a good example of turning a concept into four distinct outputs.

LO3 show a developed critical understanding of contemporary practice in relation to historical practice and theory, and the themes explored in this unit

My choice for Assignment 5 was to photograph signs relating to COVID-19.  But I wanted to go further than this and develop a sense of the place in which the signs were located.  I also wanted to develop further my understanding of juxtaposition and how the placement of certain objects within a frame, adjusting how they relate to each other, can affect the image as a whole.  The research that I undertook to explore these areas was wider than those photographers listed in the course unit and the result of this research is clearly visible in Assignment 5.  Key research included:

LO4 be able to reflect upon your own work and that of others with increasing confidence and criticality

I think that the transformation of my work in Assignment 5 between my draft submission and my final submission is the best indication of reflection on my work and my critical assessment and confidence to update it based on feedback.

For my draft submission, I created a set of images and an attempt at a PDF of a book.  This is available here -> https://iap.tonys-view.com/assignment-5-draft-submission/

For my final submission, I dropped the images and went purely with a book.  But I realised that my draft submission was not really a book, and more just a file format containing my images.

The final submission still contains a PDF of the book, but now this is a ‘proper’ book with cover, title page etc.  Furthermore, the rhythm of the images throughout the book is paced using blank pages, and a theme of yellow throughout the book.  Going even further, I created the physical book which required me to research further the mechanics of creating the physical form, which is now published on Blurb.  This is a significant step forward based on my reflection and feedback compared to the draft submission.
