Updates from Draft Version
This assignment has evolved a lot since my original thinking. It has changed from one of being purely about signs to one about places. I am very pleased with the outcome.
A number of changes have been post discussion with my tutor:
- I had to decide between separate images and a book. I have chosen book for two reasons: Firstly, by using a book whilst I dont have control of how the viewer will flip through the book, I do at least have control of the layout and sequencing; Secondly, I have been experimenting with layout approaches for presentation all of the way through IAP but never used a book format, I wanted to experiment and learn from the exercise.
- Some of the images from the draft submission did not fit with the rest, mainly #4 and #8 and so I have included different images to those. I included the clean shopping trolly sign which then felt out of context and so I put a wider shot of the supermarket opposite it.
- Thinking about the rhythm of the book I have:
- Used blank pages to insert pauses in the book on certain images that I want the viewer to focus on.
- Distributed yellow images throughout the book to create a running theme
- Used portrait orientation in conjunction with the pauses
- Finally, I have included an opening title page and a final blank page to recognise this as a proper book rather than it simply being a PDF of a set of images.
Production
I used InDesign to set out my book. The pdf is available here which should be viewed as a 2-page spread:
I have also produced the book into physical format using blurb. Images of selected pages from the book are shown below.
Further Learning
I wrote about my learning in terms of the images in my reflection on the assignment -> see here.
Creating the book has helped my think and learn a lot more about presentation and editing a series for book production, which is very different to editing a series of images stand alone.
I have also developed skills in how to turn a set of digital images into a physical book, again, this is very different to simply printing out the images.
I have also learnt the reviewing and editing the book in physical form is a very different experience to editing a pdf based book. In particular, pages with blank facing pages look and feel very different in the two different ways of looking at them.
